The University already has and is continuing to establish some of Australia's most advanced scientific infrastructure for characterisation and fabrication at the nanoscale. The former includes state of the art electron microscopy (see Infrastructure - MCEM), optical and bio-spectroscopy, particle characterisation and rheology and x-ray diffraction; the latter includes a range of bottom-up (e.g. synthetic chemistry) and top-down (e.g. photolithography) approaches to micro- and nano-fabrication.
